Six minors in critical condition after accident in La Ceiba

HIGÜEY, La Altagracia.– Six minors, five boys and one adolescent, are in intensive care units in critical condition following the traffic accident on the La Ceiba–Otra Banda highway, Higüey municipality, which left several people dead. The victims were returning from a religious activity. According to sources, the driver of the garbage truck, José Laurencio Severino, 47 years old, who remains in custody for investigation, tested positive on the breathalyzer test, with a level of 0.42 degrees, when the normal is 0.0.

The governor of La Altagracia, Daisy De Óleo de Bastardo, a pediatrician by profession, reported that all medical personnel were immediately summoned to assist the affected. In a press conference, she detailed that 19 people were involved, of whom four died at the scene and two more in the hospital. In the General and Specialties Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia (HGENSA), nine people were admitted; of these, two died while seven remain hospitalized, including a 17-year-old adolescent who is intubated. In the Provincial Maternal and Child Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia there are five children, between seven and 13 years old, all with polytrauma, three of them in critical condition in the intensive care unit. The local representative of the General Directorate of Land Transit (Digesett) indicated that the garbage truck first hit a motorcycle and then the van that was transporting the other victims, causing the tragedy.
