Santo Domingo, RD.- When Mariah Carey says “It’s time”, everyone understands that Christmas has arrived. 30 years have passed since she released “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, and the song is not only still alive: every December it generates a huge movement again, almost as if it were a business that activates itself.
The song came out in 1994, on the album Merry Christmas, and has left its mark ever since. It is estimated that in its first stage it generated more than 60 million dollars and that each year it produces between 2.5 and 3 million just in royalties, according to figures mentioned by Forbes, The Economist and The New York Post.
On digital platforms, it remains the queen. It's the most listened-to Christmas song in the world on Spotify, and its official video, uploaded in 2009, has already surpassed 838 million views on YouTube, considering that most of those views are concentrated in the last weeks of the year.
Its presence is everywhere: movies, series, commercials, memes, and even unexpected collaborations, like when Mariah did a version with Justin Bieber in 2011. It also appears in Love Actually, a movie that helped new generations adopt it as part of their Christmas.
In 2021, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it the Diamond Award, making it the first Christmas song in history to reach 10 million certified units in the United States.
And every December, while people set up the tree, decorate the house and start buying gifts, Mariah's voice is heard again in shopping malls, parties, Christmas markets and playlists everywhere.
