Texas authorities arrest a person in connection to threat to the state Capitol

Austin (USA), June 14 (EFE).- Authorities in Texas (USA) arrested a person on Saturday in connection with the "credible" threat that led to the evacuation of the State Capitol prior to a protest against the Donald Trump government.

The arrest took place during a traffic stop in La Grange, a town located 100 kilometers east of Austin, the state capital, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The authorities have not yet identified the suspect, but assured that there is no longer an "active" threat and that the investigation into the event remains open.

The Texas State Capitol - the seat of the legislature was evacuated this Saturday afternoon due to a "credible" threat to lawmakers who planned to participate in the national call to protests against the Donald Trump government.

The demonstration, which joins the hundreds of calls across the country, drew thousands of people to the city center, with banners criticizing the president and his immigration policy.

The protests, called by progressive organizations, coincide with President Trump's birthday and the military parade in the country's capital to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Armed Forces.

More than 2,000 demonstrations are expected in the 50 states of the country to protest against what the organizers call the "authoritarianism" of the Government of the Republican leader.

The threat to lawmakers in Texas comes on the same day that two state congresswomen from Minnesota, in the north of the country, were attacked in their homes.

Democrat Melissa Hortman and her husband were murdered in what appears to be an act of political violence, as reported by the state governor, Tim Walz, in a press conference.

While Democratic state senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times, allegedly by the same assailant, and were injured.

Authorities highlighted that the attacker posed as a police officer and was wearing a bulletproof vest, a gun, and a badge.

In addition, they assured that the suspect's vehicle contained a "manifesto", as well as a list with names of people, including those of the two politicians who were shot.
