Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out this Thursday against the five senators who voted alongside the Democratic caucus to approve a joint resolution that seeks to block future incursions into Venezuela, a measure he considered attempts to take away from the Head of State "the power to fight and defend" the country.
"Republicans should be ashamed of the senators who voted with the Democrats in an attempt to take away our ability to fight and defend the U.S. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Josh Hawley and Todd Young should never be elected to any public office," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network, naming the five members of his party who voted in favor. You may be interested in: http://Senate of the US tries to prevent Trump from carrying out more military actions against Venezuela without Congressional approval
The measure, eminently symbolic and presented by the Democrats with the co-sponsorship of Republican Rand Paul after the operation that on Saturday captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, was approved with 52 votes in favor and 47 against. "This vote seriously harms the self-defense and national security of the United States, limiting the authority of the president as commander in chief," added Trump, who considered the War Powers Act, passed in 1973 so that Congress controls the ability of a president to deploy troops, to be "unconstitutional" for violating Article II of the Constitution, which establishes the powers of the head of state. Although Senate approval is a significant first step, for the resolution to be binding it would also need to be approved by the House of Representatives, where Republicans also have a small majority, and then signed by Trump himself, who would surely veto it. To override the veto, both Chambers would need to re-approve the resolution, but by a two-thirds majority.
