Santo Domingo. – The installation of the Transformation Center (CT) that was planned to be built near the Church of Our Lady of Carmen has been officially canceled, according to Melissa Berigüete, archaeologist of the National Directorate of Monumental Heritage.
Berigüete explained that, after the discovery of archaeological remains at the site, the decision has been made to preserve them, definitively ruling out the continuation of the project on that land. The vestiges will be covered and protected, in order to avoid future damage.

“The remains will stay where they were found. The construction of the CT has been completely cancelled at that point,” the expert stated.
Meanwhile, workers present in the area stated that they have not received any formal order to resume the work. Awaiting instructions, they have only limited themselves to removing soil in the excavation area.
The decision sets a precedent in the preservation of historical heritage in urban environments, particularly in areas of high colonial value such as the historic center of Santo Domingo.
