Santo Domingo.– The deputy for the National District for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Danilo Díaz, affirms that in that political organization there is not “a single candidate” linked to drug trafficking or with extradition requests, while defending the internal mechanisms of the party. The legislator maintains that the PLD has rigorous filters to prevent the nomination of people with questionable backgrounds. "We have a system that we have always taken care of that. In the PLD, not everyone can be a candidate," he says. Díaz also refers to the debate on independent candidacies currently being analyzed in the National Congress, indicating that the current legislation already allows political participation through parties and movements, in accordance with Law 33-18 on Political Parties. In that sense, he underlines that there are more than 30 political organizations in the country, so any citizen interested in running for an elective office can do so through these structures. In his opinion, governing requires not only aspirations, but also teams, proposals, and organization.

The PLD leader also defends the role of established political parties in the Constitution, considering that they guarantee collective representation and democratic order. Regarding a possible reform to the Political Parties Law to strengthen controls on political financing, Díaz indicates that he is not yet aware of a specific proposal, although he positively values any initiative that promotes transparency. Finally, it rejects generalizations about supposed links between drug trafficking and politics, and urges that, if cases exist, those responsible be specifically identified, amid a context of national debate on electoral system reforms.
