Caracas. – The acting president of
Venezuela,
Delcy Rodríguez, informed that in the coming hours the country will surpass 500 releases of detainees, as part of the release process promoted by the
Venezuelan Government.
The statement was offered amid growing pressure from human rights organizations and opposition sectors demanding the release of political prisoners and the fulfillment of official announcements regarding amnesties and humanitarian measures.
Rodríguez assured that the releases will continue to take place progressively, while the Venezuelan authorities maintain that the measures are part of a judicial review and national reconciliation process.
The announcement comes days after the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, reported the release of at least 300 people this week, including senior citizens, people with health problems, and long-term detainees.
However, organizations like Foro Penal have questioned the official figures and claim that the number of verified releases is lower than reported by the Government. They also maintain complaints about the continued detention of hundreds of people for political reasons.
Releases occur amidst a complex political scenario in Venezuela, where different national and international sectors maintain focus on the human rights situation and the Venezuelan judicial system.
