Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic continues to consolidate its position within the international audiovisual industry through active participation in the Marché du Film of the Cannes Film Festival 2026, considered the main cinematographic market in the world for the co-production, circulation, financing and promotion of audiovisual projects.
In its 2026 edition, the Marché du Film brought together more than 16,000 accredited professionals from more than 140 countries, including producers, distributors, sales agents, film funds, festivals and international audiovisual institutions. Through an agenda focused on strengthening strategic alliances, opening internationalization opportunities and promoting Dominican talent, the national delegation held meetings and activities with key players in the global audiovisual ecosystem. The Dominican presence in this strategic space was led by the General Directorate of Cinema (DGCINE), an entity that continues to promote the international projection of the national audiovisual sector through initiatives aimed at strengthening the country's links with international networks of industry, co-production and film circulation. As part of this international promotion strategy, the Dominican Republic had a country stand at the Marché du Film, conceived as a space for articulating the promotion of the territory as a filmic destination, as well as a platform for generating professional links, co-production opportunities, and industry meetings. We recommend reading: Massiel Taveras impresses at Cannes with an Oscar de la Renta dress and a biblical "King of Justice" cape
The space was supported by emerging producers Joan Monegro and Paul Ovalles, the latter, winner of the DGCINE Award awarded during the tenth edition of MACS PUCMM for his project “Sueños Siamés”. Both contributed to energizing meetings with international film professionals and agents, strengthening spaces for connection with potential allies in the global industry. Likewise, filmmaker Gabriela Ortega participated in a conversation panel focused on the growing interest of the global industry in Latin American narratives and the role of the region within contemporary productions. The meeting brought together industry professionals to reflect on representation, co-production and content circulation, highlighting the importance of expanding the presence of Latin American stories in international exhibition and distribution circuits. As part of the industry agenda, Dominican producers and professionals held meetings with representatives from Germany, Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, and the Basque Country, aimed at identifying opportunities for co-production, financing, training, and international circulation of audiovisual projects. Simultaneously, the Dominican Republic participated in the working session “Distributors and Film Funds Working Session”, organized by Europa Distribution along with CAACI, EFAD and AFAN, an international dialogue space focused on the contemporary challenges of circulation, audience access and sustainability of independent cinema. The general director of DGCINE, Marianna Vargas Gurilieva, participated as an institutional guest in this space of international exchange, along with representatives of funds, associations, and audiovisual authorities from different territories. The meeting allowed for the sharing of perspectives on the contemporary challenges of film distribution and circulation, as well as exploring cooperation mechanisms aimed at strengthening the access of audiovisual works to new audiences and international markets. Dominican participation in this space reaffirms the country's interest in actively integrating into international discussions on cooperation between public funds, distributors, and audiovisual markets, in a context where the global visibility and circulation of works is increasingly decisive for the sustainable development of the sector. Within the framework of the Fantastic Pavilion of the Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival, the Dominican projects "Ecos", by Kryzz Gautier, and "Macheteros", by Daniel Oramas, were selected to participate in the next edition of Fantastic Lab Costa Rica, scheduled for July 2026. Both projects reflect a growing trend in Latin American genre cinema towards narratives with political and social content, where horror functions as a vehicle to explore memory, history, and contemporary tensions. Likewise, within the market agenda, the screening of the film "Interior. Apartment - Day", by Israel Cárdenas and Laura Amelia Guzmán, was held as part of the exhibition activities aimed at promoting works in international commercialization circuits. The screening was made possible thanks to Reel Suspects, the sales agent in charge of the international circulation of the work. The Dominican agenda also included the support of private sector allies such as Club Hemingway, Banco López de Haro, Forteza and La Aurora Dominicana, whose accompaniment contributes to the strengthening of the international projection of Dominican cinema and the positioning of the country in strategic industry scenarios. You can also read:Fátima Bosch, Miss Universe 2025 shines in her Cannes debut
