La Romana.- The hospital system of La Romana was seriously affected this Wednesday after the 24-hour work stoppage called by the National Union of Nursing Workers (SINATRAE), as part of a national protest day.
The measure was heeded in various health centers in the province, where nursing staff suspended their work to demand attention to a series of demands that, according to them, have been ignored by the authorities of the National Health Service (NHS).
Among the hospitals that joined the strike are the Aristides Fiallo Cabral Hospital, the Dr. Francisco A. Gonzalvo Maternal and Child Hospital, as well as the centers of Villa Hermosa and Guaymate, in addition to several Primary Care Units (UNAP).
During the day, nurses and assistants raised their voices to demand urgent improvements in their working conditions. Among their main demands are the granting of 100% pensions, the change of category for auxiliary staff, the appointment of more nurses —including those hired during the COVID-19 pandemic who have not yet been formalized— and the payment of overdue economic incentives.
The protesters warned that, if they did not receive concrete answers from the authorities, they could intensify the actions in the coming days, which would worsen the situation in the public health centers of the province.
The strike has generated concern among patients and families, given the significant reduction in services at key hospitals in the region.
