Santo Domingo.- Various left-wing forces from the university environment proclaimed Dr. Jorge Asjana David as a candidate and next rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), within the framework of an act of unity in which students, teachers and administrative workers participated, who reaffirmed their commitment to the transformation of the academy.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that the support of the progressive sectors is added to the support already expressed by other national political forces, including the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), consolidating a broad coalition around the candidacy of Asjana David.
The event took place within the framework of the 57th anniversary of the Flavio Suero Student Front (FEFLAS), an organization founded in 1969 by the revolutionary leader Amín Abel Hasbún, whose historical trajectory has been linked to the defense of a public, democratic, popular university at the service of the Dominican people.
In representation of the Flavio Suero Student Front (FEFLAS), the Renovator University Front (FUR) and the Juan Pablo Duarte Syndical Current (CSJPD), the president of FEFLAS, Stalin Quezada, highlighted that the unity between students, teachers and administrators constitutes an unequivocal sign that the UASD is experiencing a historic moment, marked by the convergence of generations and wills in defense of an open, democratic, popular, quality and innovative university.
"We value the career of Dr. Asjana David, who has his origins in the student movement, experience as a teacher and closeness to the university community," Quezada underlined, while stating that his profile represents a guarantee of commitment to the real needs of the institution, as well as with the construction of a modern UASD, capable of responding to the challenges of the 21st century.
For his part, master Wagner Gomera, national coordinator of the Frente Universitario Renovador (FUR), stated that the UASD teachers feel expressed in the academic proposals presented by doctor Jorge Asjana David, especially those aimed at strengthening teaching quality, the dignification of the teaching staff, curricular innovation, scientific research and institutional modernization. He maintained that the university needs a management that places the academy at the center of its priorities and that guarantees better conditions for teaching, researching and serving the country.
Organizations also presented several transformation proposals on which a next administration should focus, including the expansion of the academic offer, the strengthening of the teaching staff, the improvement of infrastructure, and the creation of safe and dignified environments for students throughout the country. In that sense, they reaffirmed that the student must be the central axis of university management.
For their part, Asjana thanked the support provided by these forces, while reiterating her commitment and assuring that the time has come to promote a new stage for the UASD, based on efficiency, educational quality, the unity of the university community and the rescue of institutional dignity, to make the primada the first.
