Machado demands to renew the CNE and sets conditions for new elections in Venezuela

Caracas.– Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado called for the renewal of the National Electoral Council (CNE) “as soon as possible” and established a series of conditions to move towards presidential elections in Venezuela. Machado maintained that the electoral body must be comprised of independent individuals without partisan ties, in addition to having international observation to guarantee transparency and trust in the electoral process. The opposition leader insisted that the call for elections must be held in accordance with the Venezuelan Constitution, although she clarified that it is first necessary to reorganize the electoral system and update the voter registration, noting that millions of Venezuelans are still not registered, especially those who emigrated from the country.

Machado also stated that free elections require political guarantees and democratic conditions that allow the participation of all sectors, while reiterating the need to generate institutional trust in the country. The leader’s statements come amid the political debate open in Venezuela about the possibility of calling new presidential elections and after recent calls from opposition sectors to accelerate a democratic transition.
