The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed the formal lawsuit process against the company Google for changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" on digital platforms.

The lawsuit was filed after discovering that Google implemented the name change on a widespread basis, contrary to President Donald Trump's decree, which establishes that it should only be applied to US areas.

Sheinbaum expressed her disagreement, which lies in the fact that said modification encompasses territories belonging to Mexico and Cuba, not only the continental shelf of the United States.

"The only thing we want is for the U.S. decree to be respected, which names Gulf of America only to its own continental shelf," the president said.

Claudia Sheinbaum stressed that the federal government does not question the right of the United States to rename its territory, but rejected that this extends to international waters.

"The U.S. government has no authority to rename the entire Gulf, because it is an international zone," he maintained.

He also highlighted that a first resolution related to the case has already been issued, and the Mexican government is awaiting an official response from the technology company.

The objective is for Google to restore the name Gulf of Mexico in those areas that do not belong to the United States, as international regulations dictate.
