Trump says he canceled a "second wave of attacks that was expected" against Venezuela

Donald Trump stated this Friday that, given the cooperation of the Venezuelan Government with the U.S., he canceled a "second wave of attacks" that was expected against Venezuela.

In a Truth Social post, the US president called the recent release of prisoners by the Venezuelan authorities a "very important and intelligent gesture." "The US and Venezuela are working well together, especially with regard to rebuilding, in a much larger, better, and more modern way, their oil and gas infrastructure. "Thanks to this cooperation, I have canceled the second wave of attacks that was previously expected, which seems that it will not be necessary," Trump continued. However, he warned that the US ships will remain in their positions "for security and protection reasons."

Release of prisoners

In the previous day, the occupant of the White House stated that Caracas began the release of prisoners at the request of the U.S. "We asked them and they have been great. Really, yes. They have given us everything we wanted," he indicated in an interview with Fox News presenter, Sean Hannity, after a question about it. Previously, the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced the release of "a significant number of Venezuelans and foreigners", as "a unilateral gesture" of the Bolivarian Government aimed at consolidating internal peace.

Bombings and pressures

The decision comes after the U.S. bombings of January 3 against Venezuelan territory, resulting in the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, as well as the death of at least 100 people and damage not yet fully accounted for on various infrastructures. However, Trump has not ruled out perpetrating another military attack against the Bolivarian nation if the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, does not act in accordance with Washington's agenda and has arrogated the alleged right to control political decisions in Venezuela, as well as its oil industry for an indefinite time. Faced with this, Rodríguez assured on Tuesday that his country is not being governed by any external agent. "The Government of Venezuela rules in our country; there is no external agent governing Venezuela. It is Venezuela, it is its constitutional Government, it is the consolidated popular power," he stated in a televised intervention.

Aggression against Venezuela and kidnapping of Maduro

Caracas described Washington's actions as a "very serious military aggression" and warned that the objective of the attacks "is none other than to seize Venezuela's strategic resources, in particular its oil and minerals, attempting to forcibly break the nation's political independence." Maduro pleaded not guilty on Monday in his first hearing before the U.S. Justice Department in the Southern District Court of New York, accused of narcoterrorism. Flores proceeded in the same way. Venezuela's Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, was sworn in on Monday as the acting president of the South American country. Many countries around the world, including Russia and China, urged the release of Maduro and his wife. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Venezuela must be guaranteed the right to decide its destiny without any external intervention. "We reaffirm Russia's unwavering solidarity with the Venezuelan people and government. We wish acting President Delcy Rodríguez success in resolving the challenges facing the Bolivarian Republic. For our part, we express our willingness to continue providing the necessary support to our friendly country, Venezuela," added the ministry.
