The city of La Ceiba is dismayed after the death of a woman who remained hospitalized for four days, after being the victim of a violent attack by pit bull dogs.
The victim, 55 years old, died on Saturday, March 21, as a result of injuries sustained on Tuesday, March 17, at the Atlante residence, when three dogs reacted aggressively in a family home, according to local media reports.
Among the documented injuries are bites to the neck, facial damage, and amputations. Witnesses have reported that the attack was
"extremely violent." After entering a relative's home, Fuentes Villatoro was knocked down and bitten by the three dogs until neighbors managed to intervene.
These people, after removing the animals, requested help from the
Honduran Fire Department, which transported the victim in critical condition to the hospital. The medical staff tried to stabilize her for several days, but the damage from the injuries proved irreversible.
The death caused shock in the area, friends and family who fondly remembered
Fuentes Villatoro. Animal rights organizations have warned that the problem is not solved by limiting breeds, but by promoting a culture of responsibility, training and decent living conditions for pets
According to doctors, dog attacks, especially by pit bull breeds, have multiplied in recent years in Honduras, and are usually linked to lack of supervision or a suitable environment for the animals.
At the same time, the event has sparked a wave of reactions regarding the responsibility involved in owning dogs considered highly dangerous.
Users on digital platforms have pointed out the need for a
greater awareness on the part of the owners, as well as the implementation of stricter measures to prevent this type of incident.
Experts highlight that socialization, upbringing, and environment are determining factors for behavior, although they warn that breeds with greater physical capacity can produce more serious damage.
The case has also generated a call for civic education regarding coexistence with animals. Animal rights organizations have emphasized that the solution does not solely involve restricting certain breeds, but rather promoting a culture of responsibility, which includes proper training, constant supervision, and decent living conditions for pets.
