The Russian army advances in the creation of a security zone with the capture of a locality in Sumy

Moscow, May 31 (EFE).- The Russian army advanced today in the creation of a security zone in the Ukrainian region of Sumy (North) with the capture of another town.

According to the war report from the Ministry of Defense, units of the Séver military group took the village of Vodolagui.

Vodolagui, a village that had about 150 inhabitants before the war, is located a few kilometers from the border with Russia.

Russian troops also attacked positions in several locations in Sumy and the neighboring region of Kharkiv, whose territory would also be part of that security strip that Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced to protect the Russian border regions from Ukrainian artillery.

In the last week, according to Defense, Russian forces have taken five locations in Sumy, whose capital is still out of Russian reach.

Furthermore, the report highlights that units of the Vostok (East) grouping also conquered a locality, Novopil, in the Donetsk region.

This year, the Russian army launched a new offensive in Sumy and Kharkiv, which has intensified since the almost complete liberation of Kursk, partially occupied by Ukrainian troops since August 2024.

According to Ukrainian analysts, the enemy has been attacking along a 50-kilometer sector in Sumy, which shares a 560-kilometer border with Russia.

Kiev has already had to evacuate 213 localities in Sumy, which are attacked by small assault groups that move not in tanks but in light vehicles.

In over two months of offensive, Russian forces have advanced up to 12 kilometers in several areas, although progress remains uneven, according to Ukrainian authorities and independent analysts, such as DeepState.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced that Moscow has concentrated approximately 50,000 troops on the border with Sumy.
