During the final round of the Home Run Derby at Truist Park, Dominican Junior Caminero, third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays, watched as one of his hits headed with power beyond the fence, until, suddenly, a young hand rose and caught the ball in mid-air. A robbery? Technically yes. But luckily for Caminero, the officials determined that the ball had already crossed the home run line, so the play did not affect the official count. What did remain was an unforgettable anecdote. The young protagonist of the caught ball was identified by The Athletic as Sam Musterer, a 17-year-old boy, son of an official scorer for the Braves. According to his explanation, he didn't know exactly where he was standing in relation to the fence. “I just reached out and grabbed it”, he recounted naturally.
The moment, recorded from different angles, quickly went viral and recalled a similar play that occurred in 1985, when Ryne Sandberg lost a home run after a similar catch in a previous event of the Derby. The Mariners' catcher Cal Raleigh, who ultimately became the champion of the event, didn't miss the opportunity to joke: “I paid him”, he said with laughter referring to Sam. Despite the incident, Caminero had an outstanding performance and reached the final round of the Derby, where he fell 18-15 against Raleigh, on a night full of spectacle and good humor.
