Brasilia.- Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro led a gathering of hundreds of motorcyclists this Tuesday in Brasilia, the first time he has participated in a massive event since the Supreme Court imposed a series of precautionary measures on him, as part of his trial for attempted coup.

Bolsonaro arrived at this annual event known as Moto Week, accompanied by his wife Michelle and several far-right deputies, but did not give speeches, due to the Supreme Court's ban on using social media or having third parties rebroadcast his statements through that medium.

In the gathering, some motorcyclists carried signs against Supreme Court magistrate Alexandre de Moraes and against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as well as banners supporting US President Donald Trump, on the eve of the 50% US tariff on Brazilian exports coming into effect. Trump linked the tariff to the trial of Bolsonaro, accused of organizing an attempted coup after his electoral defeat in 2022 to remain in power, a process that the American leader has called a "witch hunt". In parallel to the tariff threat, De Moraes imposed an electronic ankle bracelet on the former president a week and a half ago and prohibited him from using social media, upon perceiving a risk of flight. Furthermore, the magistrate pointed to indications of a crime of obstruction of justice, due to the campaign in the U.S. by Eduardo Bolsonaro, another son of the former president, for the White House to sanction the members of the Supreme Court involved in the trial against his father. Following the imposition of precautionary measures, the former president made statements to the press that were interpreted as an affront by De Moraes, who warned Bolsonaro that he could order his preventive detention if he were to engage in similar behavior again. Since then, the far-right politician has kept a low profile, avoiding speaking to the press and giving interviews.
