Puerto Rico under flood warning for Tropical Storm Erin

San Juan.- The National Weather Service (NWS) of San Juan issued this Friday a flash flood warning from this Friday until the night of next Monday due to the passage of the tropical storm Erin through the area.

"An increase in showers and thunderstorms is expected to occur late tonight into Saturday morning as Erin moves north of the region," the NWS said in a statement.

The agency added that the period in which the most rain is expected will be tomorrow, Saturday, in the northern area of Puerto Rico and the north of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and on Sunday towards the south and east of Puerto Rico, possibly extending to Monday morning. The areas where the most precipitation is expected will be the south and east of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to the forecast, up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain is expected to fall, both in the south and east of Puerto Rico and in the Virgin Islands. In other areas, an estimated 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain is expected to fall.

The SNM, likewise, issued a high wave warning for breaking waves between 7 (2 meters) and 13 feet (4 meters) that are expected to arise between 08:00 (12:00 GMT) on Saturday and 06:00 (10:00 GMT) next Monday. This strong swell will cause dangerous conditions for swimmers and some coastal erosion, the SNM warned. Also, the meteorological agency announced that there is a risk of strong sea currents between the morning of this Saturday and the night of Sunday. Some of the areas where these maritime conditions are expected to occur are in the municipalities of San Juan, Loíza, Luquillo, Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barceloneta, Manatí, Vega Baja, and Aguada.
