Look, look, look! Goodbye to María Antonieta de las Nieves "La Chilindrina"

With her uneven pigtails, large glasses, and a green dress that seemed eternal, La Chilindrina became one of the most beloved faces on Latin American television. Well, who doesn't remember those episodes of El Chavo del 8 on their tube television? Behind the endearing character was María Antonieta de las Nieves Gómez Rodríguez. She was a Mexican actress, comedian, and voice actress who was on stage and in hearts for more than half a century, and who will always be the mischievous girl from the neighborhood of El Chavo del 8.

María Antonieta was born on December 22, 1946, in Mexico City, into a modest family. From an early age, she showed an inclination for the performing arts, and at the age of three, she was already taking ballet classes, and soon after, she entered the Acting Academy of Andrés Soler, an institution where several generations of artists were trained. It was there that teachers of the stature of Carmen Montejo and Prudencia Grifell noticed her talent and recommended her to take her first steps in front of the cameras.

At the age of eleven, he made his film debut with the film Pulgarcito (1957) and on television he participated in Senda prohibida, the first Mexican telenovela. These works opened the door to new opportunities on the small screen, in productions such as La Leona (1961) and Estafa de amor (1961). Before becoming a comedy icon, de las Nieves stood out in the world of dubbing, a discipline in which she worked between 1967 and 1970. Her voice brought to life endearing television and film characters: Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Pebbles in The Flintstones, Batgirl in Batman, Eddie Munster in The Munsters, the Invisible Woman from The Fantastic Four and Tabitha in Bewitched. Her vocal talent established her as one of the most versatile voice actresses of her generation, which would later prove key in the construction of La Chilindrina's unique voice timbre. The big turn in his career occurred in 1970, when he joined Roberto Gómez Bolaños' team, "Chespirito", in programs like Los supergenios de la mesa cuadrada. There was born the character that would mark his life: La Chilindrina, a girl with a mischievous spirit and overflowing nobility who soon became the daughter of Don Ramón and the best friend, and sometimes rival, of El Chavo del 8. The series premiered in 1973 became a television phenomenon throughout the continent. Despite her brief initial absence due to pregnancy, María Antonieta returned to the cast in 1975 and established La Chilindrina as one of the cornerstones of the program. The image of the girl with fake freckles, huge glasses, and endless mischief was forever etched in the Latin American popular imagination. Thanks to her characterizations as Chilindrina, in 2021, she was recognized with a Guinness record for the longest professional career playing the same character, at that time, with a total of 48 years The success of El Chavo del 8 did not prevent de las Nieves from seeking new horizons. In the nineties, she promoted her own projects, such as the program Aquí está la Chilindrina and the children's series La Chilindrina en apuros. These productions, however, also gave way to a conflict with Gómez Bolaños over the rights to the character. After a prolonged legal battle, in 2003 María Antonieta obtained legal approval to appear in public as La Chilindrina, thus marking the definitive break with Chespirito. Despite this, her popularity did not decline and the character continued touring theaters, circuses, and stages throughout Latin America. Beyond comedy, the actress explored other genres. In 2007, she participated in the telenovela Dame Chocolate and in 2012, she surprised the audience as the voice of Vanellope von Schweetz in the animated film Wreck-It Ralph. That same year, she was a contestant on Univision's Mira Quién Baila, showing another facet of her artistic versatility.

In 2021, her career reached an unusual milestone: Guinness World Records recognized her as the actress with the longest time playing the same child character, with more than 48 years embodying La Chilindrina.

She will continue to be a benchmark of Hispanic-American popular culture. La Chilindrina transcended generations and will continue to live in the collective memory. María Antonieta de las Nieves demonstrated that talent, discipline, and the affection of the public are capable of keeping the flame of a character that seems immortal lit. The Chilindrina will live forever!
