Washington.- A federal judge in San Francisco blocked this Wednesday the administration of President Donald Trump from carrying out layoffs of federal employees linked to the partial government shutdown, which extends for a second week.

Judge Susan Illston issued a temporary restraining order preventing the White House from proceeding with the layoffs while the processes initiated against federal employees are reviewed.

The magistrate's argument is that the workers could suffer irreparable damage if the action is carried out before the legal appeals they have filed collectively and individually are resolved.

The decision responds to a lawsuit filed by several affected federal employees, who argued that the layoffs during the shutdown would be illegal and would violate their labor and constitutional rights.

Although Trump has not directly commented on the order, he insisted during a White House conference that layoffs will continue in different agencies, focusing on people related to the Democratic party.

The government shutdown has been in effect for two weeks, and in the Senate, both parties failed for the ninth consecutive time to approve proposals for provisional funding. The lack of agreements on funds for healthcare and the permanence of the Obamacare program continue to be the reason everything remains paralyzed.

Republican Senator John Kennedy said this Wednesday that the United States is on the verge of the "longest government shutdown in history," blaming the Democrats for not yielding their position.

During the last few weeks, 4,100 people have been laid off from various federal agencies and at least 1.3 million employees are affected by suspension without pay or continuing their work without receiving the corresponding payment.
