The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expressed this Thursday his willingness to mediate in the conflict opened by the U.S. against the Government of Venezuela. "I am thinking that before Christmas arrives, I may possibly have to speak again with the president [of the U.S., Donald] Trump to know how Brazil could contribute so that we have a diplomatic agreement and not a fratricidal war," said Lula. In a conversation with journalists, the president said that he had already spoken with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, to find out what cards had been put on the table in the negotiation with the US, and was clear that tensions could be resolved "without war".

"It was possible to negotiate without war, so I am always concerned about what is behind it," said Lula, after insisting that the interests behind generating a conflict in a region of peace, such as Latin America, must be explained. "What are the interests of others that people still don't know?" he wondered. Mediator
In that vein, Lula appealed to his previous experience as a mediator by recalling that he was one of the creators of the Friends of Venezuela Group and tried to be an interlocutor between the government of the late President Hugo Chávez and the George W. Bush Administration to reduce tensions. "I do the same now with Trump and with Maduro (…) I believe a lot in the word, in the power of persuasion, in the power of conviction," added the South American president. In his opinion, diplomacy "yields much more results" than warmongering stances. "I am available to both Venezuela and the U.S., to contribute to a peaceful solution in our continent," he pointed out. US Aggressions
On Wednesday, the US carried out a new "kinetic lethal" attack against a supposed drug boat in the Pacific, causing the death of the four crew members. Washington has already carried out numerous similar operations as part of its aggressive policy towards Caracas, without providing evidence that the vessels are related to drug trafficking. In addition, President Donald Trump ordered on Tuesday the "total blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela" and designated the Maduro Administration as a "foreign terrorist organization".
