The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, along with the Superintendent of Electricity, Andrés Astacio, held a meeting with representatives of the main thermal power generation companies in the country to analyze the possible impact that the current crisis in the Middle East could have on the supply of fuels used for electricity generation in the Dominican Republic.
The meeting was convened by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, in coordination with the other authorities of the electricity sector, as part of the follow-up actions carried out by the Government in the face of the international geopolitical context and its possible repercussions on energy markets.
During the meeting, the minister explained that the Dominican Government is closely monitoring the development of international events that could affect the proper performance of the electricity subsector and, in general, the energy sector.
"Within the framework of the contingency plan to address the current situation, we consider it valuable to listen to the main actors in the system in order to seek integrated solutions," Santos said.
In the meeting, representatives from various power generation companies in the country participated, including Empresa Generadora de Electricidad de Haina, S.A. (EGE-HAINA), Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Itabo, S.A (EGE ITABO), Generadora Palamara-La Vega, AES Dominicana, Empresa de Generación Eléctrica Punta Catalina (EGEPC), Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation (PVDC), San Pedro Bioenergy, Karpowership Dominican Republic, S.A.S., Manzanillo Energy, S.A.S., Sultana del Este, Transcontinental Capital Corporation (TCC), Consorcio Energético LAESA, Lear Investment, among other companies in the subsector.
According to the participants, most companies reported that they currently have sufficient coal and natural gas supply guarantees to cover their operations for the rest of the year, which helps maintain the stability of the national electricity system.
The meeting also allowed for the exchange of technical information on fuel inventory levels, current supply contracts, and response mechanisms to potential variations in international markets.
Also present at the meeting were the Superintendent of Electricity, Andrés Astacio; the Executive Director of the National Energy Commission (CNE), Edward Veras; as well as the Vice Minister of Energy, Ricardo Guerrero, along with other sector officials.
The authorities reiterated that they will continue to monitor the evolution of the international scenario and will maintain permanent coordination with the agents of the electrical system, with the aim of preserving energy security and the stability of the electricity supply in the country.
