Venezuelan manager Carlos Mendoza reported that Soto arrived at loanDepot Park with a fever, body aches, and general malaise, symptoms similar to those of the flu that have affected several members of the Mets' clubhouse during the last week. The stellar outfielder was originally slated as the designated hitter and third in the batting order for the series finale against Miami, but was replaced by MJ Meléndez, while A.J. Ewing moved to take his turn in the lineup. "He's sick, so he was left out of the lineup. He's been dealing with this for the last three days and woke up with a fever today," Mendoza explained. Despite the physical discomfort, Soto is going through one of his best offensive moments of the season. In his last seven games, he's batting for an average of .333, with four home runs and seven RBIs. The Mets have struggled offensively during the series in Miami, scoring just two runs in the first two games against the Marlins. New York entered Sunday's game with losses in four of their last five matches.
