PITTSBURGH. – Dominican Oneil Cruz once again demonstrated his extraordinary power by hitting a monumental home run that went out of the PNC Park and landed in the Allegheny River, during the Pittsburgh Pirates' loss to the Minnesota Twins.
Cruz's home run occurred in the third inning and traveled a projected distance of 450 feet, with an exit velocity of 110.8 miles per hour, becoming only the seventh home run in the stadium's history to fall directly into the river without a bounce.
The solo home run came against a cut fastball from Taj Bradley on a 3-1 count and brought Pittsburgh closer on the scoreboard 5-4. It was also the twelfth home run of the season for the Dominican outfielder, who has 37 RBIs.
Cruz continues to extend his personal record at PNC Park, where he already has seven home runs that have reached the Allegheny in any way, the most for a Pirates player. Four of those hits were connected in the 2024 season.
The Quisqueyan slugger seems to be regaining his offensive rhythm heading into June, after a discreet May in which he has only hit three home runs, after having connected nine between March and April.
In another game of the day, Ronald Acuña Jr. was once again decisive in the Atlanta Braves' 8-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
The Venezuelan opened the game with a 429-foot home run on just the fourth pitch of the game, continuing the great offensive moment he's going through after hitting a grand slam the night before at Fenway Park.
Michael Harris II led Atlanta's offense by batting 5-3 with three RBIs, while Colombian Didier Fuentes earned the win in relief after dominating a complicated situation in the fifth inning.
The Braves secured the victory with a four-run rally in the sixth inning, in which the Dominican Jorge Mateo and Mike Yastrzemski also contributed.
With the victory, Atlanta continues to consolidate at the top of its division, while Acuña continues to show signs of returning to his best offensive version.
