Gil faced serious control and effectiveness problems from the start of the game. In just over four innings, he allowed six earned runs, five hits, and gave up three walks, without managing to strike out any batter. Houston's offense barely missed on three attempts out of their 83 pitches, highlighting the right-hander's lack of command. Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted that the pitcher has had difficulty regaining consistency in his mechanics and the effectiveness of his fastball, which has limited his ability to generate missed swings. The early damage included a two-run homer by Christian Walker in the first inning, followed by another two-run homer by Mexican Isaac Paredes in the third inning, extending the Astros' lead. Although his fastball reached averages of 95 miles per hour, Gil admitted that he is working to regain more speed and precision in his pitches, aspects that he considers key to regaining his level. The right-hander, winner of the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2024, is going through a complicated start to the season, with an ERA of 6.05 and only nine strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched. With the eventual return of starters like Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón, Gil's outlook in the Yankees' rotation looks uncertain, so he will seek to rediscover his best form in the minor leagues to aspire to a new opportunity in the Major Leagues.
