Ángel Martínez could face prison at Christmas

They present a new lawsuit for defamation and insult

Santo Domingo.– The commercial company GB Group, S.A.S. filed this morning a second complaint with civil action against Mr. Ángel Ramón de Jesús Martínez Jiménez (alias "El Detective"), accusing him of reiteration of the criminal conduct of defamation and insult after a new wave of defamatory attacks perpetrated while he was in a judicial negotiation process.

This new criminal action arises after Martínez, taking advantage of the situation of the recent blackout caused by the collapse of the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI), spread videos on digital platforms categorically stating that “the blackout was the product of an operation by the Haitian Gilbert Bigio”, accusing him of terrorism and sabotage of national security, without presenting a single piece of evidence to support such charges.

The second complaint qualified Martinez's conduct as an act of manifest recklessness and procedural bad faith. According to the filed document, the defendant attended conciliation hearings on October 16th and November 6th, simulating an intention to reach an agreement. However, he used that time to intensify his discrediting campaign, falsely claiming that the plaintiffs seek his physical elimination: “they want my body either in a jail or dead” and that they would have to take him out of the country in “pieces”. This conduct of recidivism and criminal reiteration aggravates his procedural situation and increases the risk that the Public Prosecutor's Office will request coercive measures consisting of preventive detention to prevent the continuation of the crime. If this request is accepted, Ángel Martínez could spend the Christmas holidays in detention.

The recklessness of the defendant is not new. It is recalled that his previous legal representative, lawyer Carlos Mesa, resigned from his defense precisely because of the impossibility of controlling the public statements of his client, who insists on litigating in the media what he cannot sustain in the courts. Martínez continues to defy the Dominican legal system, using channels like YouTube and Facebook to utter insults ("shameless", "terrorist") and lies that undermine legal security and foreign investment. The new complaint is based on the violation of articles 21 and 22 of Law 53-07 on High Technology Crimes and Offenses. Unlike the first process, the reiteration of criminal conduct in the midst of an open process allows judicial authorities to impose more severe measures to ensure that the accused ceases the commission of the illicit acts, which places Martinez on the verge of imminent deprivation of liberty.
