Santo Domingo. – The Office for the Reordering of Transportation (OPRET) reported that, as part of the final works to expand the capacity of Line 1 of the Santo Domingo Metro and allow the circulation of six-car trains that will offer more comfortable trips and without long lines, the service will be temporarily suspended at the five elevated stations located in Villa Mella (from Mamá Tingó to Hermanas Mirabal), between Wednesday, July 16 and Sunday, July 20.
During those days, essential work will be carried out, such as the movement and reconfiguration of the railway signaling system equipment, which is essential to allow the circulation of the new six-car trains, whose implementation will begin in early August and which will circulate in a mixed manner with the current ones, according to availability and user demand.
The institution detailed that from Wednesday, July 16 to Friday, July 18, the service will be interrupted between the Francisco Peña Gómez (Los Guaricanos) and Mamá Tingó stations, in Villa Mella. While on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20, the suspension will cover the section between the Hermanas Mirabal (near Parque Mirador Norte) and Mamá Tingó stations.
To ensure user mobility, OPRET, in coordination with the Transportation Cabinet, will have the support of the Metropolitan Bus Services Operator (OMSA), which will offer free units covering the route between Mamá Tingó and Hermanas Mirabal, in both directions. These actions will also be carried out with the support of the National Institute of Transit and Terrestrial Transportation (INTRANT), the General Directorate of Traffic and Terrestrial Transportation Safety (DIGESETT) and the National Police, to ensure efficient logistics and order on the roads.
Also, OPRET reported that during the suspension, the affected stations will remain open for the sale and recharge of cards, in order to avoid accumulations and long lines once the service is resumed. In this regard, citizens are invited to recharge their cards before the start of the suspension for greater comfort and agility in their future trips. "In the coming weeks we will begin operating six-car trains, which will be incorporated progressively, depending on availability and user demand, coexisting in a mixed way with the current trains. We know that these works can generate momentary inconveniences, but we are convinced that they represent a decisive step to offer a more agile Metro, with more space and less waiting time. Thanks to these works, our users will be able to enjoy more comfortable trips and without long lines. We ask for understanding from the citizens and our users," highlighted the executive director of OPRET, Ing. Rafael Santos Pérez. The institution reiterated its commitment to continue strengthening the Integrated Metro-Cable Car Transportation System of Santo Domingo, providing the hundreds of thousands of users with a safe, efficient, and quality service for their daily commutes to work, educational centers, and other points in the city.
