Tobías Crespo will submit a project to unify motoconcho unions and improve their living conditions

Santo Domingo.– The deputy of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) for the National District, Tobías Crespo, announced that in the coming days he will present a bill to the Chamber of Deputies that seeks to transform the reality of thousands of informal transport workers on motorcycles. The initiative proposes the creation of the National Guild of Motoconchistas (GRENAMO), with the aim of unifying this important sector, including it in official public policies and guaranteeing them better working and social conditions.

“This sector has been growing for decades, but in a disorganized, informal, and unregulated manner. They do not belong to the social security system. With this proposal, we want those working men to organize themselves, to be educated in matters of citizen security, road safety, and technical-professional training. With the support of INFOTEP, technical schools, and other institutions, it will be easier to achieve this if they are well-structured,” explained Crespo, upon receiving the original proposal of the bill from its author, Ramón Heredia Ramírez, who represented the motoconcho sector.

The announcement was supported by various representatives of the sector, including José Ureña, president of Coordinamoto; Albert Gons, president of the Motoconchistas Cooperative; Enger Nolasco, representative of digital transport platforms; Cristián Diloné, president of the Motoconcho Federation of Los Ríos; George Sosa, from Santo Domingo Oeste; and Jefry Jiménez, community liaison for the motoconchistas.

During the presentation, Crespo warned that the lack of regulation and education in the sector has contributed to the high number of traffic accidents in the country.

“We are facing a true pandemic of accidents, where, according to statistics, motorcycles are the main ones involved. A solution must be found for this problem. This sector mobilizes millions of Dominicans every day and generates millions of pesos in direct and indirect taxes, therefore, it cannot be ignored any longer. It is time to organize it, because they are a reality”, the legislator pointed out.

For his part, Heredia Ramírez highlighted that the creation of GRENAMO will mark a before and after in the history of Dominican transportation.

"When this law is approved, motoconcho drivers will no longer be seen as a problem and will be recognized as part of the solution," he assured.

Crespo, who is part of the Permanent Commission on Mobility and Land Transportation of the Chamber of Deputies, underscored the economic and social relevance of the motoconcho sector for the country.

"You are not only seeking to improve your living conditions, but also to contribute to national development, thanks to the significant number of jobs you generate and the economic impact you have, both in the payment of taxes and in the dynamism of urban and community transport," he added.

The initiative is backed by union leaders and is projected as a proposal with great social, economic, and community impact. If approved, it would represent a significant step towards the formalization of the sector, the improvement of road safety, and the inclusion of thousands of workers in the country's social protection system. With the creation of GRENAMO, the National Congress could respond to a historic demand of motoconcho drivers, turning them into strategic allies of development, urban mobility, and social peace in the Dominican Republic.
