New Selena documentary arrives on Netflix with unreleased material and the intimate voice of her family

Los Angeles. — Thirty years after the murder of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, her family opens the most personal files of the Queen of Tex-Mex in the new documentary “Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy”, which premieres on Netflix this Monday and is directed by Isabel Castro. With the executive production of singer Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla III's siblings, the film promises to show a never-before-seen side of the artist. Despite her short life, Selena's influence remains monumental in Latin music. For millions, her name is a symbol of identity, pride, and cultural representation. Now, thanks to this project, her family seeks to preserve that legacy in a more intimate and authentic way. The genesis of the documentary began when the Quintanilla family contacted Castro after seeing her work “Mija” (2022), convinced that her sensibility was the right one to tell the story from within. “We connected immediately”, reported the director. “We are both older sisters”.

Suzette, for her part, highlights that Castro deeply understood the Mexican-American experience: “She totally understood the struggle of embracing both cultures”.

The team faced a vast archive: DVDs, VHS tapes, film reels, USB drives, and a complete collection of images and videos that the family calls "the vault." Sorting and restoring all this material took years, but it allowed them to reveal Selena as a daughter, sister, and wife, beyond the musical superstar. Among the most emotional items are videos recorded by Suzette, a handwritten letter from Selena to her husband Chris Pérez, and a series of moments experienced inside the iconic tour bus, Big Bertha. One of the most anticipated testimonies is that of Marcella Quintanilla, Selena's mother, who had not given public interviews since the 1995 tragedy. In the documentary, she shares family albums and deeply emotional memories. "I love my mom in the documentary," Suzette said excitedly.
