National: July 29th Anniversaries

  • 1793: Although the National Assembly of Paris decrees the freedom of slaves on the island of Santo Domingo, their "owners" oppose it and one hundred thousand slaves rebel, with many being murdered, their houses destroyed and coffee and sugar plantations burned.
  • 1824: The Municipal Cemetery of Santo Domingo is inaugurated, during the Haitian Occupation Government presided over by Jean Pierre Boyer.
  • 1844: The government for the first time orders the issuance of paper money for an amount of $150,000, alleging the withdrawal of Haitian money from circulation.
  • 1844: By order of President Pedro Santana, the patrician Juan Pablo Duarte is imprisoned in the San Felipe fortress, in Puerto Plata.
