16-year-old fatally stabbed inside a bodega in the Bronx

New York.-
A new act of youth violence shocks the Bronx, after a 17-year-old teenager was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of the fatal stabbing of Aliyah Williams, 16, inside a bodega in the Williamsbridge neighborhood. The crime occurred on Tuesday in broad daylight and raises concern about the increase in knife attacks in the city.

According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the victim was followed to the "Deli Grocery" store, located near the intersection of Mickle Avenue and Boston Road. There, both young women reportedly had an argument that ended in tragedy when the aggressor pulled out a bladed weapon and attacked Williams, injuring her in the head and torso. The attack occurred at 3:56 p.m. and was captured by security cameras. The minor was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after. The victim lived just two blocks from the scene, according to police sources.

Family Pain and Outrage

“She asked me for $10 dollars for food by message that same day. That was the last time I heard from her,” lamented her grandmother, Rose Anderson. “She was a quiet, kind girl, with dreams. She didn't deserve such a cruel end.”

The NYPD arrested the alleged attacker, whose identity has not been revealed because she is a minor. She was formally charged with homicide and remains in custody at a juvenile center. Authorities have not specified the motive for the dispute.

Wineries, Recurring Scenarios of Violence

This new case once again sets off alarms about the growing violence inside New York's warehouses, which in recent months have been the scene of serious crimes, many of them committed by minors. The United Bodegas of America (UBA) has repeatedly denounced the insecurity faced by these establishments. From January to July of this year, at least six fatal stabbings have occurred inside bodegas in the five boroughs, with a particularly high incidence in the Bronx and Harlem.

Crimes with bladed weapons increase in NYC

Although official statistics reflect a decrease in shootings and homicides by firearm, crimes with bladed weapons are on the rise. According to NYPD data, in 2024, 4,493 stabbing cases were recorded, representing a 6% increase compared to the previous year. Even more concerning, fatal stabbings increased by 29% compared to pre-pandemic levels (2019).

By the end of September 2024, more than 65 people had lost their lives due to knife or blade attacks, surpassing the 54 cases of the same period in 2023. The trend continues in 2025, with an average of at least one death per week related to bladed weapons.

Concern about violence among minors

The death of Aliyah Williams adds to a series of violent events involving teenagers in public settings. Experts in citizen security and child advocates warn of the urgent need to reinforce violence prevention programs in schools and vulnerable communities. "The normalization of the use of bladed weapons among young people is a phenomenon that must be addressed with comprehensive public policies," said Leticia Ramos, director of the Youth Security Observatory of New York. "More surveillance is not enough; education, psychological care, and real opportunities to break the cycle of violence are needed."

Key Figures of the Spike in Knife Violence in NYC:

  • +4,493 stabbings reported in 2023.

  • +29% increase in fatal stabbings compared to 2019.
