• 1648: in Boston (United States), citizen Margaret Jones is hanged as a witch, in the first execution of this type in the city.
• 1800: 87 km southwest of Milan (Italian peninsula), the French army of the first consul Napoleon Bonaparte defeats the Austrians in the Battle of Marengo and reconquers Italy.
• 1823: Guatemala separates from Mexico.
• 1864: in Spain, Isabel II inaugurates the National Mint and Stamp Factory.
• 1907: in Norway the National Association for Women's Suffrage ensures that Norwegian women have the right to vote in parliamentary elections.
• 1937: Pennsylvania becomes the first (and only) state in the United States to officially celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday.
• 1938: in the United States, the magazine Action Comics presents Superman.
• 1942: in Amsterdam (Netherlands), the Jewish girl Anne Frank begins writing her diary. She will be murdered by the Nazis two years later.
