Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva underwent a medical procedure this Friday to remove a skin lesion on his head. The intervention, scheduled and performed at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, went without complications, according to the medical teams responsible. After the surgery, Lula was discharged from the hospital and returned to her home in the Pinheiros neighborhood, where she will remain at least until Sunday while awaiting the results of the biopsy of the extracted tissue. The procedure performed on Lula consisted of the removal of a basal cell carcinoma, the most frequent type of skin tumor, linked to accumulated sun exposure, according to the medical report. The 80-year-old president underwent surgery early in the morning and also received an injection in his right thumb to treat tendonitis. The surgical procedure lasted about an hour and went without a hitch.

The extracted tissue was immediately sent to the laboratory, although the doctors noted that it was a localized injury, with no signs of spread. The only instructions given to the president were the use of a hat, sunscreen and a bandage in the treated area, following dermatological criteria. The president's Friday schedule was cleared and attendance at the Workers' Party congress in Brasilia will depend on the postoperative evolution. The medical team clarified that the intervention does not affect Lula's pre-election campaign, who is seeking re-election in October. The president has a history of previous interventions: in 2011 he overcame a laryngeal cancer and in recent years he underwent surgery for hip osteoarthritis and was treated after an intracranial hemorrhage due to a domestic accident. Doctors say Lula suffered no after-effects from that episode and that, after the current operation, he can recover without restrictions. Regarding the origin of the lesion, specialists explained that basal cell carcinoma results from accumulated sun exposure over the years. The treated keratosis represents a superficial thickening of the skin and can originate from genetic factors or sun exposure, especially in fair-skinned people. The removed lesion was actinic, considered precancerous, with the potential to evolve into skin tumors if not treated in a timely manner. These lesions usually appear in exposed areas, such as the scalp, face, and hands, and require medical follow-up to prevent complications.
