Azua. – The City Council of the municipality of Azua de Compostela held this Friday, in the Session Room of the City Hall, the accountability act corresponding to the management period 2025-2026, as well as the election of the Board of Directors of the Capitular Hall, in compliance with the provisions of Law No. 176-07 of the National District and the Municipalities.
The activity was led by Mayor Rafael Hidalgo, along with the Council of Councilors and local authorities, in an environment of institutionalism, harmony, and collective commitment to the development of the municipality.
During his speech, the mayor emphasized that one of the fundamental pillars of his management has been decision-making based on actively listening to the citizenry, through the application of the participatory budget, which has allowed the execution of works that directly respond to the needs of the people.
In that sense, he highlighted important initiatives developed during the period, including the construction of the children's park in the La Bombita sector —a work awaited for more than 20 years—, which will positively impact hundreds of families by creating decent spaces for the recreation and development of children.
Likewise, he highlighted the construction of the Monument to the Hero of the Battle of Azua of March 19, 1844, General Nicolás Mañón, a work that rescues a historical space of great symbolic value for the province and vindicates the memory of one of the most important episodes in national history.

Likewise, he valued as a milestone for the development of the province the announcement made by the Dominican Government, through the Ministry of Tourism and the Executive Committee of Infrastructure of Tourist Zones (CEIZTUR), regarding the public tender for the construction of tourism service infrastructure in Playa Monte Río, an initiative that will allow to organize and enhance this important natural destination, boost the local economy, generate new employment opportunities and improve the quality of life of the communities.
Need to improve road interconnection
In other news, Mayor Rafael Hidalgo raised the urgent need to build an overpass or traffic distributor at kilometer 15 of Azua, a point that has become a critical intersection due to the increasing vehicular flow.
He explained that the economic dynamism of the Southern region, driven by significant public investments in areas such as Pedernales, Cabo Rojo, Barahona, San Rafael and other locations, has significantly increased traffic on this road, generating congestion and risks for drivers and pedestrians.
He detailed that the investments being developed in the south of the country have transformed the dynamics of the region. Projects in Pedernales, Cabo Rojo, Barahona and other areas, along with the initiatives of the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Public Works and EGEHID, have notably increased vehicular traffic.
"This, added to the bypasses, has sparked great interest in the south as a domestic tourist destination, doubling the number of visitors. This growth, driven by the vision of President Luis Abinader, has turned what was once called the 'Deep South' into a true 'Fertile South'," said the mayor.
In that context, he indicated that the construction of an overpass in this area would decongest traffic during peak hours, reduce accidents, improve interprovincial connection, boost trade, and guarantee greater road safety.
Committed and collaborative team
The mayor reaffirmed the Azua City Hall's support for President Luis Abinader's administration, whom he defined as a strategic ally for the development of the Southern region, highlighting the investments that have boosted the economy and improved the quality of life of the population.
Finally, Hidalgo valued the joint work of the Council of Aldermen and the entire municipal team, highlighting that the advances achieved have been possible thanks to a management based on collaboration, commitment, and love for Azua.
"We have a formidable team that has worked in harmony, always putting the well-being of our people at the center. That is the basis of the results we present today," he concluded.
