Los Ángeles.- The tech giant Meta laid off about 700 employees as part of a strategic move that seeks to accelerate the company's strategy focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to The New York Times this Wednesday. This wave of layoffs comes 24 hours after the company presented a new and ambitious incentive plan for its top executives that seeks to reach a market capitalization of nine trillion dollars by 2031. The program includes six key leaders to retain talent in the competitive field of AI, including the CTO, Andrew Bosworth; the Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox; the COO, the Spaniard Javier Oliván; and the CFO, Susan Li. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly defended the need to continue investing in AI, an approach that aligns with the strategy of the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to ration teams and replace a large part of the workforce, as other tech companies have already done.

The plans for the profound change that the technological giant is experiencing come amid two legal defeats for the company that have occurred this week. A Los Angeles jury found Meta and YouTube guilty this Wednesday of harming the mental health of minors in a historic lawsuit over social media addiction, for which they will have to pay compensation of three million dollars. This resolution adds to the sentence handed down yesterday by a New Mexico jury that also found Meta guilty of concealing information about deficiencies in its platforms and business practices that facilitated child sexual exploitation and was sentenced to a fine of 375 million dollars.
