Santiago.- Residents of the Reparto Universitario in this city filed a constitutional protection action in order to prevent the monorail route from crossing that sector, as the Trust for the Development of the Mass Transportation System (Fitram) is currently contemplating.
The community members reiterated that the permits granted establish a different route, which includes Estrella Sadhalá Avenue, and not the passage through residential and ecologically sensitive areas, as the residential area in question represents.
As explained by lawyers Mito Núñez and Juan de Dios Almonte on behalf of the neighborhood association of the sector, the appeal was filed before the civil courts of this city.
They explained that the action would protect the ecosystem, which would be negatively affected by the placement of monorail structures over the Burgos stream in this city.

Almonte denounced that the plans submitted by Fitram contemplate the installation of 23 monorail columns directly over the stream bed, which would endanger the flora and fauna of the environment. He indicated that environmental permit number 4775-24, issued by the Ministry of Environment and on which Fitram relies, establishes that the route must be along the Juan Pablo Duarte highway, turn onto Estrella Sadhalá Avenue and end on Yapur Dumit Avenue. The president of the neighborhood association, Reparto Universitario, Valentina Pichardo, expressed that the community is not against the monorail project, but demands that the environment be respected. In the coming days, the court must set the date for the hearing. Meanwhile, the community maintains its firm position and appeals, even "to good judgment and to God," so that what they consider an unfair decision that endangers a vital ecosystem for the city of Santiago is respected.
