Santo Domingo.– Senators from various blocs applauded President Luis Abinader's decision to declare the Cartel de los Soles a terrorist organization through decree 500-25. In that sense, the senator from La Vega, Ramón Rogelio Genao, supported the president's initiative, highlighting that it is essential to decisively confront drug trafficking.

"It is necessary to dismantle this organization. This fight is not exclusive to a single country, but to all, because even if we are not big consumers, we are bridges and, unfortunately, victims of this scourge," expressed Genao.

In the same vein, Senator Santiago Zorrilla, representative of El Seibo, maintained that any organization that practices terrorism should be considered as such.

"Any organization dedicated to terrorism is, by definition, terrorist," Zorrilla stated.

This measure is taken a few weeks after the United States Department of the Treasury, during the Donald Trump administration, classified the Cartel of the Suns in the same way.

According to the statement from the Presidency of the Republic, this decision responds to what is established by the Dominican Constitution, which considers as a high priority the fight against transnational criminal activities that put at risk the interests of the country, as well as national and regional peace, stability, and security. Furthermore, the statement highlights the importance of coordinating with the relevant multilateral bodies to adopt, within the framework of international law, the necessary sanctions and cooperation measures against the aforementioned terrorist group. Article 2 of the decree, issued on September 2, instructs the State's intelligence and security agencies to act both within the national territory and against Dominican interests abroad.
