The Spanish National Police and the ROS-Roma dei Arma del Carabinieri unit of Italy have arrested three members of the Calabrian mafia 'Ndrangheta on the island of Ibiza (Balearic Islands, Mediterranean), who were subject to European arrest warrants for their alleged participation in drug trafficking and membership of a criminal organization.
The three detainees were brought before the court of the Audiencia Nacional, whose central investigation court number 1 has already ordered their imprisonment.
The National Police reports this Wednesday in a statement of these arrests, made on the 15th within the Tramonto operation, and which has also included two home searches, one in Ibiza and another in Barcelona.
In these homes, the agents seized 35,000 euros in cash, jewelry and luxury watches - one of them is worth 120,000 euros -, as well as false documentation, narcotics and mobile devices.
The arrest was made possible after an investigation that began in 2024 and during an operation classified as high risk due to the dangerousness of the detainees and their resistance to arrest.
The 'Ndrangheta is more than 150 years old, the Spanish National Police describe it as "one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world" and highlights its influence on the politics, economy and security of the countries in which it is established or its "highly hermetic" structure based on discretion and family ties.
According to the Police, Spain is in the crosshairs of this organization within its expansion plans, due to its strategic geographical location. The 'Ndrangheta has an active presence in Europe, America, Africa and Asia and is a "potentially destabilizing threat to States".
The Police highlight the danger of the combination of violence, territorial control and financial sophistication and warn that Spain presents ideal conditions for this mafia due to its geographical and cultural proximity and linguistic ease.
