Japanese taxi driver arrested on suspicion of drugging and raping about 50 women

Tokyo.- Taxi driver Satoshi Tanaka, 54, was arrested on suspicion of drugging and raping about 50 passengers, a spokesman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police confirmed.

Authorities found 3,000 videos and images of the taxi driver assaulting the women in the vehicle itself or at their home, after forcing them to take pills to make them fall asleep under the pretense that it was for their health.

According to the spokesperson, the detainee is suspected of having given a woman in her early 20s sleeping pills last July, after which he took her to his house and abused her, filming what happened on his phone, as well as stealing her cash.

The woman got into the taxi after drinking with her friends and the authorities are investigating several dozens of similar cases after finding the thousands of images and videos on the man's phone.

When questioned, Tanaka said he "did not remember" what happened. Some of the images on the phone date back to 2008, according to local media reports.

The detainee had already been arrested last October on suspicion of drugging another woman and stealing about 40,000 yen (about $277 or 246 euros), after which he was released and arrested again in December for another alleged assault.
