Cincinnati Dominates Cubs with Power and Pitching: Abbott Unbeatable and Fraley Punishes with the Bat

CHICAGO. – The Cincinnati Reds abruptly halted the Chicago Cubs' good momentum by defeating them 6-2 on the afternoon of Friday, May 30, at Wrigley Field, thanks to a brilliant outing by left-hander Andrew Abbott and an offense that exploded with three home runs.

The left-handed pitcher, who hasn't lost all season, worked seven nearly perfect innings in which he only allowed one hit, struck out eight, and gave up a walk. With this performance, Abbott (5-0) lowered his ERA to 1.51 and continues to establish himself as one of the most dominant arms in the old circuit.

Friedl, Fraley, and Stephenson punished the opposing pitching

From the first turn of the game, TJ Friedl set the tone with a solo home run against Colin Rea, who succumbed again to the Cincinnati bats for the second time in just a week. In the fourth inning, catcher Tyler Stephenson hit a two-run homer and then Jake Fraley repeated the dose in the sixth inning with another two-run hit.

Fraley, who has Puerto Rican roots, has been consistent in the heart of the Reds' lineup, and in this game he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Cubs react late but it's not enough

Chicago, coming off a four-game winning streak, barely managed to wake up offensively in the eighth inning, when Michael Busch hit a triple and then Matt Shaw drove in two runs with a single. But it was already too late for a lineup that was silenced by Abbott and the solid red bullpen, led by Emilio Pagán, who got the final outs to preserve the victory.

Overview in the standings

With this victory, the Reds evened their record to 29-29, putting themselves in contention for the National League wild card. The Cubs, for their part, dropped to 35-22 and remain as runners-up to the Brewers in the Central Division.

The series continues this Saturday in the afternoon, with the Cubs sending Drew Pomeranz to the mound, while the Reds will rely on the young arm of Nick Lodolo.
