At 37 years old and in his 18th season with the Dodgers, Kershaw achieved the milestone by striking out Vinny Capra with a slider on the outside corner, to close the sixth inning and lift the Los Angeles fans in an ovation that lasted more than six minutes.“It was overwhelming to feel that,” an emotional Kershaw said. “I don’t have great words, except that it was really special.”
An exclusive milestone
With this achievement, Kershaw joins a select group of barely 20 pitchers who have reached 3,000 strikeouts in the Major Leagues, and is only the fourth left-hander to do so, along with:- Randy Johnson
- Steve Carlton
- CC Sabathia
- Walter Johnson (Senators)
- Bob Gibson (Cardinals)

- Final result: Dodgers 5, White Sox 4
- Decisive moment: Walk-off by Freddie Freeman in the ninth
- Atmosphere: Full stadium, tension and excitement in every pitch
- Strikeout 3,000: Arrived on the 100th pitch of the night
“I didn't throw so well tonight. The slider was terrible. But it was such a special night in every way,” Kershaw admitted.
Will he be the last to achieve it?
With Max Scherzer (Blue Jays) and Justin Verlander (Giants) as the other assets in the club, there is no guarantee that any more pitchers will join soon. The closest, like Chris Sale (2,528) and Gerrit Cole (2,251), face obstacles due to age and injuries.Family, Legacy, and Gratitude
Kershaw achieved the feat with his family present in the stands. He especially thanked the fact that he had spent his entire career with the Dodgers:His debut came in May 2008; 17 years later, his first strikeout of Skip Schumaker stood as the beginning of a career worthy of the Hall of Fame.“The Dodgers have also stayed with me. I am very grateful to be able to say that I spent my entire career here and that I will finish it here.”
Manager Dave Roberts' Reaction
“It takes a lot of tests, tribulations, surgeries, rehabilitation, frustration and tears to get to 3,000 strikeouts,” Roberts said. “Clayton has checked all the boxes.”
