New York.- An 18-year-old woman died while in custody at a police station of the New York Police Department (NYPD) in The Bronx, according to official sources this weekend.
The tragic event occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday at the 41st Precinct headquarters, located on Longwood Avenue, in the Hunts Point section. According to the preliminary report, the detainee lost consciousness inside the police facilities, which prompted a rapid response from the officers. "Several officers began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical personnel," the NYPD said in a statement. Despite efforts, paramedics who arrived at the scene transported the young woman to Lincoln Hospital, where she was declared dead shortly after. So far, authorities have not revealed the identity of the deceased nor the reasons for her arrest. The case is being investigated by the NYPD's Force Investigation Division, a unit that investigates any incident involving the use of force or deaths in custody. The event has generated concern in the community of the South Bronx, where civil rights organizations have begun to call for transparency and a thorough investigation into what happened.
