Interior and Police clarifies that it has not signed agreements related to the Civil Registry

Santo Domingo. – The Ministry of Interior and Police (MIP) clarified this Friday that it has not signed any agreement involving functions related to the Civil Registry, after the Central Electoral Board (JCE) recalled in a statement that it is the only body constitutionally authorized to administer and safeguard said registry in the Dominican Republic.

In its pronouncement, Interior and Police emphasized that it has not taken any action that could be interpreted as interference in the competencies of the JCE. The institution explained that the meetings recently held with various social and professional sectors are part of its usual agenda of listening and dialogue, and do not imply agreements on matters outside its attributions.

The MIP reaffirmed its commitment to strict respect for the legal framework and the powers established by the Constitution and the laws, urging that any opinion or public statement be based on confirmed information to avoid confusion and preserve respect among institutions.

The clarification comes a day after the JCE warned that any agreement involving the Civil Registry and not having its participation lacks legal and constitutional validity.

According to Article 212 of the Dominican Constitution, the JCE is the entity in charge of the administration and safeguarding of this registry, including the custody of the books that reflect the nationality of each registered person.

The Board reiterated its willingness to collaborate with different state entities through formal inter-institutional agreements, with the aim of reducing the under-registration of births and guaranteeing the right to identity for the entire population.
