Public Health requests autopsy to clarify death of woman linked to "flesh-eating bacteria"

Santo Domingo, August 12, 2025 – The Ministry of Public Health reported that it requested an autopsy to accurately determine the causes of death of a 61-year-old woman, who died in a private health center in the capital. The institution clarified that, so far, there is no evidence linking the death to the so-called "flesh-eating bacteria" (Flesh Eating Bacteria), as has been circulating on social media. According to the initial medical report, the patient was referred from another center after presenting acute dehydration secondary to gastroenteritis, associated with an abdominal infectious condition of unknown origin. According to preliminary information, the woman had visited several food establishments with other people. Subsequently, she presented vomiting and diarrhea, symptoms that also affected two companions, who were treated on an outpatient basis and showed improvement.

The Vice Ministry of Risk Management, together with the General Directorate of Medicines, Food and Sanitary Products (Digemaps) and other technical areas, carried out a survey in the businesses visited, took food and surface samples, and verified hygiene conditions. These samples were sent to the Human Consumption Products Evaluation Laboratory for analysis. Public Health indicated that all investigation protocols have been applied and that the results will be released as soon as they are available.
