White House considers extending federal control of Washington D.C. police.

Washington - The White House reported that the federal intervention on the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington D.C., ordered by President Donald Trump, could extend beyond the 30 days provided by law. Any extension would require approval from the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt.

The measure includes the deployment of at least 800 members of the National Guard in the capital. Mayor Muriel Bowser rejected the decision and stated that violent crimes have decreased this year. Trump justified the intervention citing comparisons of homicides with other capitals and the goal of removing homeless people from the streets.

The National Guard, whose activation in the District of Columbia depends on the president, is often used in emergencies and disturbances. The administration has already ordered similar deployments at other times, including operations in Los Angeles and responses to protests in Washington. The official evaluation will be carried out when the initial deadline is met.
