International Day of Obstetrics: Recognition to those who accompany life from its beginning

Santo Domingo. – This Sunday marks the International Day of Obstetrics and the Pregnant Woman, a date dedicated to highlighting the work of obstetrics professionals, who play an essential role in the care of maternal and neonatal health, accompanying women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. The commemoration originates from the tribute to Saint Raymond Nonnatus, patron saint of expectant mothers and obstetricians, and seeks to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring humanized, safe, and quality care for every mother and newborn.

In the Dominican Republic, public and private health institutions have recalled on this date the need to strengthen perinatal care, reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates, and continue training obstetrics personnel in new practices that prioritize respect and dignity for patients. International organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) have reiterated that obstetrics is key to the goal of ensuring a safe and healthy delivery, highlighting that every year millions of lives of women and babies depend on professional and close support. International Obstetrics Day also serves to pay tribute to pregnant women, recognizing their role as life-bearers and the need to provide them with comprehensive support throughout the entire gestation process.
