Vital Prevention: Early Detection Beats Cervical Cancer

The WHO established November 17 as the Day of Action for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer, marking the anniversary of the launch of the global Strategy to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer by 2030. This disease remains the second leading cause of oncological death in Venezuelan women, with alarming incidence data, especially because diagnoses are recorded at increasingly younger ages (from 20 years old). The Santa Paula Medical Group (GMSP) highlights prevention and underlines that this disease is curable if detected in time, with its main causative agent being the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), responsible for the vast majority of lesions.

Risk Factors Dr. Francisco Pestana, a gynecologist at GMSP, emphasizes that prevention is based on information and periodic check-ups: "The patient must know the risks, such as early sexual relations without protection or having multiple partners. Second, she must undergo a cytology test every year, which is very important because we have a high incidence of HPV in the country, almost 92 to 95% of women have this positive typing." This virus presents different strains, some of which are significantly more virulent in oncological terms. This difference underscores the importance of rapid and accurate identification of its type (genotyping) to ensure effective and timely therapeutic management. The specialist confirms that the fundamental measure is the annual preventive cytological control, complemented by colposcopy to verify the health of the cervix and, in cases of injury, the histological study (biopsy). The symptom that should immediately alert you is postcoital bleeding or spontaneous bleeding. However, Dr. Pestana insists that "it is unlikely that a patient who has regular check-ups in her gynecological consultation will have cancer." Therefore, "it is important to have a Pap smear regularly." For awareness, the doctor highlights the importance of continuous promotion and education.

Vaccine

Vaccination against HPV (available in tetravalent and nonavalent versions) is another crucial tool, approved for use from 9 years of age and highly effective before the start of sexual relations. The GMSP remains a pioneer by conducting detection campaigns and using high-tech equipment to ensure accurate diagnoses, such as HPV genotyping, which allows for the establishment of effective treatment and surveillance protocols.
