Canada provides Ukraine with $1.827 billion in aid for its reconstruction

Toronto.- Canada will provide Ukraine with aid worth around 2.5 billion Canadian dollars (1.827 billion US dollars or 1.552 billion euros) that will allow Kiev to access 8.4 billion dollars in loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The announcement of the aid was made this Saturday by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, after the meeting he held in Halifax (Canada) with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader made a stopover in Halifax on his way to Florida, where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss the peace plan that the Ukrainian leader presented this week. The aid announced by Carney will be provided in the form of strategic financial instruments. On the one hand, Canada will participate in an extension and expansion of the debt payment suspension of up to 1.5 billion Canadian dollars in 2025-2026.

In addition, Canada will provide loan guarantees of up to 1.3 billion Canadian dollars to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (an agency of the World Bank) for the reconstruction of Ukraine. To this figure will be added loan guarantees for another 322 million Canadian dollars to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to support gas imports and the strengthening of its energy security. Canada highlighted in a statement that, since Russia invaded Ukraine, it has provided nearly 22 billion Canadian dollars in aid to the Kyiv authorities.
