Spain asks Delcy Rodríguez for the release of Spanish "political prisoners"

The Spanish Government has asked the new president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, for the immediate release of the Spanish "political prisoners" in that country.

The management has been carried out after the current vice president of the Republic assumed power in Venezuela, as reported by the Spanish newspaper El Español and confirmed to EFE by sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The same sources indicated that the request has been made with a "verbal note" sent to the Venezuelan Government as a way of insisting, in this new political circumstance, that Spain "will not cease" in its efforts to achieve its release.

Rodríguez was sworn in on Monday before the National Assembly after Nicolás Maduro was apprehended by US forces and taken to the United States, where he is accused of drug trafficking and other crimes.

The Spanish Government, very critical of the US military intervention, announced yesterday through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, that it was preparing to speak with Delcy Rodríguez.

Spain has different interests in Venezuela, also business interests, in addition to a colony of about 150,000 people.

The Executive also announced that it will continue to maintain dialogue with the Venezuelan opposition to achieve a dialogue that enables stability in the country.

The Spanish Government confirmed that fourteen people of Spanish nationality remained "arbitrarily" detained in Venezuelan prisons, the majority with dual nationality and born or residents in that country.

In September 2025, the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (CLIPP) and the Vente Venezuela party mentioned the existence of around twenty Spanish citizens among those imprisoned for political reasons.

One of the latest cases is the arrest of José María Basoa and Andrés Martínez Adasme in September 2024, accused of belonging to the Spanish secret services and planning an attack against Maduro.
