Santo Domingo. – The First Instruction Court of the National District will hear this Friday the request for a counter-technical expert report on the ruins of the Jet Set nightclub, the scene of the roof collapse that caused the death of 235 people and left dozens injured on April 8, 2025. The request was made by lawyer Miguel Valerio, who legally represents the brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, owners of the nightclub. The lawyer seeks that the court order a new technical study of the structure, with the purpose of having an independent report that can be incorporated as evidence within the judicial process.

Judge Raymundo Mejía is also in charge of the preliminary hearing of the case, in which the Public Ministry accuses the Espaillat brothers of involuntary manslaughter and of causing aggravated injuries, alleging negligence in the management of the structural conditions of the establishment. Currently, the defendants are subject to coercive measures that include a financial guarantee of RD$50 million, periodic reporting to the judicial authorities, and a ban on leaving the country. According to the prosecution, the owners would have opted for improvised and low-cost solutions, despite being aware of the structural failures of the roof, evidenced, it is claimed, by photographs, videos and internal communications from staff. Investigations suggest that the structure was overloaded with the installation of large-tonnage air conditioning equipment, including six air conditioners of between 15 and 20 tons, as well as water tanks, without any technical studies to support the building's capacity to withstand such weight.
